Karl Deisseroth has done it again. After being a main driving force behind the application of optogenetics as a tool in Neuroscience he and his team have developed a new hydrogel which allows researchers to strip lipids out of the brain without loosing on stability. Why you want to get rid of lipids? They are the main agent blocking the passage of light within a given tissue. The result of this process is not only amazing but a huge step forward in figuring out the anatomy and the connections of and within the brain. This should be of great help especially for the Connectome project, which just got a major funding boost by Barack Obama. And here is the Video - definitely check it out:
